Using Your Share - June Edition

Every week we receive wonderful farm fresh foods and then have to figure out how to use them all before the next week when more wonderful farm fresh foods arrive. Sometimes it is just a challenge to figure out what the item IS, let alone how to eat it all before it goes bad or you are inundated with more yummy food.

Farm Notes from Nancy

The finalized CSA schedule is finally done for all the groups! This always feels like a monumental task when we begin and once the routes are sketched out, it all falls into place. If you have not already received and email showing your schedule, be on the lookout for this today.

The Farmers markets we attend are in full spring/summer swing. On Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning we load the van with coolers and head to Saratoga to see our local customers. This market runs all year round and has been great in getting the community involved; it is a busy market with lots of variety. On Sunday we head for Dorset VT; a lovely old architecture village just to our east over the first ridge of the Green Mountains. This market is held on a green and seems more like a festival and community meeting morning.

Jerusalem Artichoke Fritters

This week I was intrigued by the inclusion of jerusalem artichokes in our initial season share (I thought for sure we'd get radishes!).  I didn't want to eat them raw, nor did I want to roast them, so I searched the internet for something interesting and tasty-sounding.  I found that in these jerusalem artichoke fritters, which I prepared last night.

Note from Green Thumb Farm

Note from Green Thumb Farm:

Welcome back for another Season!

Our season of growing is in full swing. Many of our crops are in the ground and ahead of schedule from last year. Our Strawberry crop was the earliest since we've been growing them (over 45 years). We've never picked berries before the 1st of June - but this year we have.
Because of the early season our Farm Tour and strawberry picking is moved up to June 19th, a Saturday. It is open to all CSA members, including immediate family of members and share partners. A walking tour of one of our early fields with peas, lettuces, squash and beans will be followed by picking - 1 quart per person, no charge for tour and berries.

Melted Leeks

Last month, I made (and wrote about) a really tasty dish of quinoa, melted leeks and a poached egg. It sounded good when I first looked at the recipe, but was blown away by how it tasted all together - nutty, salty, buttery, rich but not heavy.  Fantastic. However, the melted leeks really stood out in the whole thing.  I wrote:
