Event: Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer

Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer
Reading, Slides and Signing

Novella Carpenter grows fruit and vegetables on a vacant lot and shares them with her neighbors. She also raises (and dispatches) chicken, ducks and rabbits. Meet Novella and hear her gritty, sometimes brutal, tale of farm life on the mean streets of Oakland. Her memoir, by turns joyous and sad, is refreshingly honest. A few of her Brooklyn farming friends will be on hand to talk about their projects too. Read more about Novella in a recent New York Times interview.

EVENT: More Profits, More Hunger

More Profits, More Hunger: Neoliberalism and the Corporate Control of Food Lessons from India and the US
Tuesday, October 13th 7-9pm
BRECHT FORUM (451 West St (between Banks & Bethune Sts, New York, NY)

Description

Often called the “Green Chomsky”, Devinder Sharma will discuss how US-sponsored neoliberal policies have willfully marginalized farming communities, damaging rural livelihoods and aggravating food insecurity in India and the world over. Accompanied by Arun Gupta, reporter and an editor at the Indypendent, Nancy Romer, leading Organizer of the Brooklyn Food Coalition, and other leading US food justice activists, this event will highlight the role that US agribusiness corporations have played, and continue to play, in shaping policies that have exacerbated hunger and poverty, and driven us into a global food crisis.

The event will map the network of powerful corporations, institutions, and interest groups who are driving US policies; and begin a dialogue on how to build strategic alliances between anti-corporate struggles in India and organizations and individuals in the US who are committed to stopping the global expansion of US-led agricultural neoliberalism.

News from Hellgate CSA

Dear Hellgate CSA Member:

Can you believe we only have five more weeks of the CSA?  Crazy that it's almost over!  I think it's amazing that we are still getting string beans, which I always associate with summer.  To counter that, beets are on the menu this week.  Look for a separate "special report on beets" post  with recipes and storage tips.

What's Queens Green Drinks? Very simply, it's an informal social gathering/networking event for folks that are environmentally minded. Come and I'll introduce you to some of the other like minded folks in and around Queens. If we're lucky (which is likely) we'll cross pollinate make new friends, catch up with old ones, and maybe even sprout an idea or three.
