Dear Members,
We are writing this reminder for our delivery coming up on Tuesday, July 7th. The order deadline is on Thursday, July 2nd at midnight. We are proud of the farm network we have created to provide you some of our regions fresh and family grown products.
Raise your hand if you spent an hour soaking greens and herbs last night, all the while worrying a little about eating salad every day, three meals a day all week. Fret no more!
First of all, I just want to give a nod to Meg's post of a Clotilde recipe and say there are so many vegetables that make tasty and interesting pestos. Radish greens, while excellent simply sauteed with salt and oil, are certainly an excellent choice for pesto.
Vegetable share:
radishes
lettuce
Swiss chard
cilantro
curly cress
escarole
Flour share is this week!
Don’t forget, the next meat & dairy order deadline is this Thursday, July 2nd at midnight, and delivery is next week on July 7th.
Thanks to all who are volunteering this week!
Remember to bring your bags, plastic and otherwise.
Note: Due to overwhelmingly rainy weather, the fruit farm will be unable to provide the fruit share this week. They will make up amounts throughout the season. With all farming, crops are dependent on the whims of nature.
Some of you may be wondering what to do with your lavender share. Of course, enjoying the flowers in your home for as long as they may survive in a vase is an option but you can also dry the flowers and use them in recipes. Lavender is traditionally used in the mix of herbs called Herbs de Provence. If you have dried any of your oregano from last week, that is also present in the recipe below. Additionally, if you have the herb share, here is a use for the sage you received last week.
Vegetable Share:
strawberries
radishes
curly cress
lettuce
lavender flowers
Fruit Share:
apples - mutsu
strawberries
Herb Share:
dill
cilantro
Bean share this week!
Flour the following week.
Thank you to all who volunteered this week and don't forget to bring bags to pick-up!
Our first year with the CSA involved balancing a household with two working adults one of which was completing the second year of an advanced degree at night, a toddler becoming more and more mobile each day and the usual tiny amount of food storage space in your typical NYC kitchen. We had to find a routine or the 2 pds. of zucchini, precious romaine lettuce leaves and/or 10 pounds of fruit was all gonna rot!
Over the past few weeks, I've found us slipping into last summer's routine and thought I'd pass on a few of our practices.
Strawberries are coming in and so are the rains. We've had some rain every day for the last 12 days so it will soon dry out and we'll be looking for rain! The weather systems seem to be alternating 2 weeks wet with 2 weeks dry.
Our spring farm tour and strawberry picking is happening rain or shine on June 27th. Walking tours of some of the crops will be at 10:30, Noon and 1:30. We will meet at the field on Rose Hill Road just east of our farm stand (2nd right after the farm stand, then the field immediately to the right).
Hi everyone, here is the share information for June 16:
Vegetable share:
strawberries
rhubarb
lettuce
oregano
asparagus
Herb Share:
Sage
Chives
Please remember to bring your own bags (and extras if you would like to donate!) and if you are available, please consider signing up to volunteer tomorrow!
Many thanks and see you tomorrow evening.
We now have a web page with a calendar of the CSA's distribution schedule and other CSA events: http://www.hellgatecsa.com/schedule/
If you use a calendar application like Google Calendar, iCal, or Outlook, you should be able to import this calendar into your personal calendar, so you can automatically see what shares are delivered when. It's very convenient for me, and I hope it is for you too!
Please comment here if you have any questions, problems, or suggestions!
