Notes from Green Thumb Farm

Welcome back!

Our CSA season is beginning. Our crops in the field are in full swing. We have had a cold May - very rainy with many cold nights, so our plantings have been delayed somewhat. This will effect crops all summer, as harvest will be delayed one or two weeks. Our early lettuce is ready with about 15 varieties planted. We will have plenty of radishes - red, French Breakfast, purple, and Easter Egg mix are all planted. Peppercress, a spicy salad herb, will be on our first week’s menu. There will be strawberries as well! Our strawberry crop looks wonderful at this time, and as long as there is no extended rainy weather, it should be a good year for them and us.

Our spring farm tour/strawberry picking is happening Saturday, June 21, with several walking tours throughout the day. More on this next time.

Organically yours,

Farmer Bill

What’s Queens Green Drinks? Very simply, it’s an informal social gathering/networking event for folks that are environmentally minded. Come and I’ll introduce you to some of the other like minded folks in and around Queens. If we’re lucky (which is likely) we’ll cross pollinate make new friends, catch up with old ones, and maybe even sprout an idea or three.

For our first host, we have the Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee wrapping up the end of Bike Month and gearing up for the 1st annual Tour de Queens bike tour. May 29th is also Bike From Work Day. You’ll see TA Queens Committee folks greeting you with goodies at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge on your way to Queens Green Drinks! Check out transalt.org or tourdequeens.org for more info.
